Nandita Chaudhuri’s journey as an artist has blossomed over two decades in theUnited Kingdom. Not only has she received accolades for her art works that have been displayed at major venues around the world, but she has also established a definite growing market.
Nandita paints ‘what she wants’ adhering to a ‘no rules policy’ breaking every dictum in the process. She is fearless and this is reflected in her paintings. Through her recent show ironically titled as ‘Titles are Irrelevant’ she reflects on her journey back toIndia and tries to encapsulate some of the colours and emotions that coming home can invoke. Having worked mostly in the West, she describes her current works “as a purposeful composite of the ‘progressive’, entwined with shameless ‘regression’.” Explaining this further, she adds that she is rejoicing in the warmth of Indian colors. Her western background disabled her from using bright oranges, pinks and reds. Returning home, she has amalgamated the techniques and technologies of the West with Indian colors and sensibilities, to create a surreal viewing experience. Nandita plans to work equally out ofLondon and Mumbai having recently set up studio in Bandra.
Nandita is known to have made a consistent impact on the art world and is celebrated for her ‘fearless’ expression of her craft. She has carved a unique niche for herself as a valiant artist with form fitting titles. Coming to Titles are Irrelevant and the story behind it, she affirms that, “I was thinking continually about for a ‘very’ appropriate title for my show; both when I conceptualized it as well as when I wrote myself a curatorial brief. Sometimes titles are cheesy and at other times they don’t really encapsulate adequately enough the thought processes that are integral to their creation. Everything is labeled; people, objects or situations are judged and labeled. There is the perceiver and the source; where an inevitable gap exists in viewer perceptions and the image in hand, and this gap is often lost in translation.”
She will exhibits her work in Jehangir Art Gallery on 22 June 2012.
